Journey was a medium golden female from Harvestimes Endless Journey, "Journey", and Linda Carmichael’s CH Tahnee Tupelo Xmas Cordial Outstanding Sire "Scout". She had a moderate coat with a slight wave, moderate bone, excellent pigment, nice bite and very pretty head. She weighed 61 pounds and was in great health. Other than a couple ear infections Journey has never had any illnesses.
Journey was in the show ring for a while and placed well in her classes. She earned her CD easily. Journey was an easy going, lovable girl. She liked to retrieve but liked it even better just sitting at your side. Journey produced several beautiful, healthy pups and is the mother of Dixie and Doosey, grandmother to Mercy.
Journey retired and made her home with the Prahl family where she was truly been a blessing and joy to have! She enjoyed the evening walks and spending time with their daughter when she was home from college. Journey died at the end of 2011. She was 12 years old. Here is what Heidi has to say: Journey
In the winter of 2006 our daughter, a senior in high school, was engaged in a mighty struggle with anxiety and depression.
And then God interrupted our lives with a solution that none of us could have seen. As I was driving back from dropping off our son at college in Eau Claire, I was thinking and worrying about our daughter. Suddenly the thought that we needed another dog hit me like a bolt out of the blue. Our old and beloved family dog, a golden retriever, had died a few years earlier. This idea arrived in such an unusual and powerful way that I actually laughed, noted where I was on the highway, and told God that this felt really weird, seemed to be from him – and if it was REALLY from Him then I/we needed a sign to confirm it.
I was excited at the prospect! I keep a phone book in my car and looked up the numbers for the animal shelters; where else does one get a dog on short notice? It was Sunday. The shelters were closed. When I got home the first thing I did was find my husband and tell him what had happened. “I think we need a dog, and I think that God is telling us to do this.” I told him the story. He was all for it.
I remembered a neighbor who’d gotten a beautiful and gentle adult golden retriever from a breeder. We didn’t want to train a puppy again. I walked to the neighbor’s home, got the contact information for the breeder, Deb Zierler at Harvestime Kennels, and gave Deb a call.
“You don’t know me. I’m calling because our neighbor, who has one of your dogs, gave me your name. We’re looking for an adult golden and I’m wondering if you have one you can part with.” Deb’s first words to me, not knowing that I was looking for a sign from God, replied “Isn’t it amazing how God works sometimes! I was just outside walking this beautiful 6 year old female and thinking ‘This dog is a lover, she’s too sweet to be living in a kennel all the time, what she really needs is a family.’” Deb’s insight arrived within the same hour that mine did when I was on the highway.
Since she’d brought up God, I told her our side of the story. Our daughter was struggling; God seemed to be saying that we needed a dog to help her and love her through this.
Deb was amazingly understanding and also saw God’s hand at work; this appeared to be the perfect solution for all of us. Journey could live with us except for when she was being bred and having puppies. Deb still wanted a few more litters of puppies from her. After that she would be ours for good. Deb invited us to come over and meet Journey and if we liked her we could take her home and see if she was a good fit for us. If it didn’t work out Deb would be happy to take her back.
A few days later when we arrived at Deb’s we were met by a tail wagging bundle of soft pale yellow love, head held high while proudly sporting a large and unrecognizable stuffed animal in her gentle mouth and shamelessly squeaking little whines of delight that said “love me love me love me”. Oh yes – this would work.
From day one, Journey didn’t need to wait for the invitation, she hopped right up into bed with Elsa and gave and asked for nothing but unconditional love. She was very well behaved in the house, didn’t jump on the couch, didn’t beg for food, didn’t make messes – except for chewing up that yellow magic marker on the living room carpet, which, thank God, washed out.
Our daughter needed a boost to climb out the pit of despair and Journey was exactly what her Creator knew she, and we, all needed. On her personal journey through life, this dog (with such an interesting name) is a touchstone, a road marker that will always remind her that God is real and knows her name, cares about her, and will supply all her needs. Journey remained with us until last year when passed away.
Through the grace of God and amazing determination and perseverance, our daughter graduated from high school and went on to college. This last spring she graduated with double majors in psychology and biology.
A few days ago she told us that she really wants another dog. I called Deb the next morning asking if she had another dog we might adopt. Her reply? “Heidi, you’re not going to believe this! I have this 10 month old puppy named Breeze that was going to be adopted and trained as a therapy dog. The woman who was going to adopt her is moving now and it won’t work out. I can’t believe this! I’m in the kennel and was just looking at Breeze and saying ‘what are we going to do with you?’ ”
A therapy dog. Deb says they’re just born that way – they are lovers. A dog for the girl who majored in psychology and understands, first hand, the healing power of a soft warm fuzzy muzzle and the power of a God who connects the dots in such a personal way and says “I will never leave or forsake you”.
Unbeknownst to us, our daughter had inquired about therapy dogs a while back. She wanted to train and work with one. As I write this now on a sweet summer morning, she is sitting in the front yard brushing and getting to know Breeze.
